Deciding where to live on the island can be a tough choice. As well as finding your perfect home, there are other factors to take into account - like distance to schools, town/shops and stores, gas stations, ferry terminals and bus routes. This page details the facilities available in each of the main villages/communities.

About our Villages

Ganges Village

Ganges is centrally located on the east side of the island. It's the main town on Salt Spring Island with a great selection of shops, cafes and restaurants.

  • There is a Thrifty's supermarket in the central plaza in town, as well as a Country Grocer in the "Upper Village". In addition, Natureworks on the Fulford Ganges Road is a small "green" supermarket, and health store.
  • There are many restaurants and cafes, two marinas and parks to enjoy - the largest of which is Mouat's Park which features a disc golf course, cuts through to Rainbow Road near the swimming pool and is also a popular dog-walking spot.
  • Heading out of town on Rainbow Road, Ganges has a High School, Middle School and Elementary School - and the swimming pool.
  • We have a brand new library which is also a popular meeting spot, and 3 banks - the Island Savings Credit Union (technically a credit union not a bank!), CIBC and BMO.
  • The 2 gas stations on island are in Ganges - one on Rainbow Road and the other on the main Fulford Ganges Road through town.
  • There are 2 pharmacies in Ganges centre - a Pharmasave on the Fulford Ganges Road and Salt Spring Pharmacy in Grace Point Square.
  • The Post Office is opposite Thrifty's in the central plaza.
  • There are 2 liquor stores in Ganges centre - found in Grace Point Square (BC liquor store), and a private liquor store right on Lower Ganges Road¬†(opposite Salt Spring Inn).
  • ArtSpring - the community's performing arts centre - is found at the back of Ganges, nestled against Mouats Park.
  • Also found at the back of town is a helpful auto-parts store.

Ganges "Upper Village"

The "Upper Village" is just outside of Ganges - a minute by car, and a few minutes on foot.

  • The island's only hospital is a short way down Crofton road, opposite the upper village complex.
  • Connected to Ganges by Lower Ganges Road, the "Upper Village" main complex is anchored by the Country Grocer supermarket.
Locals Tip: Some locals still refer to Country Grocer by locals by it's former abbreviated name - GVM.
  • Also in the upper village is the Return-it Depot (for recycling your empties), a second Pharmasave, a Benjamin Moore store, private liquor store and small garbage drop-off business.
  • There are other smaller complexes with a diner, offices, Penny's bakery, optical store and more.
  • The Salt Spring Legion and RCMP Station is kitty corner to Country Grocer.

Fulford Village

Fulford village is located in the south end of the island. It has a few lovely gift stores, small grocery store and is the hub for south-enders - also housing the ferry terminal to Victoria on Vancouver Island.

  • The Salt Spring Mercantile serves as a grocery and take-away snack store for locals and tourists alike.
  • There is Rock Salt Restaurant and two cafes - Rock Salt Cafe and Morningside Organic Bakery and Cafe.
  • As well as the great clothes and gift shops, you'll also find a bike shop, art gallery or two and a little dock to soak up some sunshine.
  • There is also a small Post Office which can be useful!
  • Fulford is where you catch the ferry to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island and from there you can head to Sidney, Victoria or catch a connection to Tsawwassen in Vancouver.

Vesuvius is located about one third from the top of the island on the west side. It's one of the sunniest spots on the island with a popular west-facing beach.

  • There is the Seaside Restaurant to get some great fish and chips and The Vesuvius Store (pictured) for a great cup of coffee, tea or snack and essentials.
  • There used to be a pub at the end of the Vesuvius Bay Road, and every so often there is talk of it being revived!
  • Vesuvius is also where you catch a ferry to Crofton. From there you can head to Nanaimo and a connecting ferry to Horseshoe Bay, explore Duncan, Cowichan Bay and the rest of Vancouver Island.

Fernwood is a popular spot in the north-east of the island, centering around The Fernwood Cafe.

  • The Fernwood Cafe is the epi-centre of Fernwood, situated on the corner of Walkers Hook and Fernwood Roads.
  • Fernwood Dock and Beach are opposite The Fernwood Cafe and are a popular spot.
  • Fernwood Elementary School is just down the road from The Fernwood Cafe.
  • The Salt Spring Spa and Resort is found just north of Fernwood on North Beach Road (Walkers Hook Road turns into North Beach Road at Fernwood Road).
  • There used to be Raven Street Market Cafe (restaurant & local grocery store) next door to the Fernwood cafe - we're waiting to see who buys the business and what happens next!
