Market Assistants!

With over 160 vendors, the Salt Spring Saturday Market is one of the original outdoor markets in British Columbia. We are proud to have “Make it, Bake it, Grow it” and “Vendor produced and sold” as our mottos. The regular season for the Saturday Market is April to October with additional markets at Easter and in December.

The Salt Spring Island Saturday Market Society is hiring two part time seasonal positions.

Duties & Responsibilities of Market Assistants

Both Market Assistants are part-time seasonal positions and are employees of SSISMS.

Assistant Coordinator

Rate of Pay: $21/hr

Total weekly hours: 6 approximately (average)

Expected start date: 15 June 2024

The Assistant Coordinator [AC] is to assist the Coordinator with all facets of running the market on Saturdays and, in the case where the Coordinator is unable to attend a Saturday Market, they will run the market with the Market Assistant. The AC is expected to begin training in mid June and to attend all markets up to and including Labour Day weekend. Working with the Market Coordinator, the AC will:

• collect day vendor fees, based on the fee schedule established by SSISMS; issue receipts

• monitor the three busking areas to ensure buskers are following the market guidelines

• ensure market signs are in place and supervised each market day and returned to storage at the end of the day.

• provide direction and monitor the loading and unloading of vendor vehicles

• hand out notices to vendors as and when required by SSISMS

• promote the market on all social media platforms

• monitor the presence of dogs in the market and advise their people about the no dog rule and the existence of doggy daycare

• be a friendly face for visitors and provide them with assistance and information as needed.

Additionally, when the Coordinator is absent, the AC may also:

• coordinate the placement and relocation of vendors within the designated Market area to account for Seasonal Vendor absences and Day Vendor replacements

• deposit all funds and deliver copies of receipts to the treasurer

• provide a written weekly report, including a summary of fees collected and attendance figures for each vendor category, as well as a synopsis of the day’s events during the official market season

• take calls from seasonal vendors reporting their absence.

• regulate Child and Youth Vendors and Not-for-Profit Organisations in the Market area

• respond promptly to phone/email inquiries regarding the market

• liaise with SSISMS members, CRD staff as required

Market Assistant

Rate of Pay: $19/hr

Total weekly hours: 4 approximately (average)

Expected start date: 15 June 2024

The Market Assistant [MA] is to assist the Coordinator and CA with the smooth running of the market during the summer months. In the case where the Coordinator is unable to attend a Saturday Market, the MA will assist the AC running the Saturday Market. The MA is expected to begin training near the end of June and to attend all markets up to and including Labour Day weekend. Working with the Coordinator and the AC, the MA will:
