April 2017 Events on Salt Spring Island!

  1. April Showers? Don't let a little rain stop you from enjoying the Island! While away a couple of hours at Black Sheep Books. This unique bookstore has charm and helpful staff ready to assist you find the perfect read. Peruse vintage, collectible and secondhand books galore, then curl up on the sofa and get lost in to your purchase! Looking for something a little newer? Salt Spring Books right around the corner is another great place to get your read on!
  2. God is a Scottish Drag Queen | Thursday 13th | 9:50pm | ArtSpring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $23 | God, dressed in a floral power suit, comes to skewer everything from Justin Bieber to the Pope in an unforgettable night of laughter! The show features an evening with the lord: a hilarious conversation with everyone’s favourite deity about everything from religion to pop culture including Mormons, circumcision, Star Wars, Scientology, Noah, Adam & Eve, and so much more in an unforgettable night of comedy.
  3. Showers bring flowers! Head to the trails of Ruckle Provincial Park or explore the meadows of Burgoyne Bay Provincial Park and enjoy lots of beautiful wild flowers from Indian Pipe to Daffodils to Fawn Lilies and many more!
  4. “Some Bunny Loves You” Kids Puppet Show | Friday 14th | 2:00pm to 3:00pm | Salt Spring Island Wellness Centre: 120 Hereford Avenue | $10 (kids: free) | Join British puppet Chyld Saint Thomas as he takes you on a delightful journey to the peculiar world of Carpenter Glen. Watch as he’s rudely interrupted (on several distinct occasions) by an authentically Russian bunny rabbit! Attend the show or not, the fact of the matter is that some bunny loves you…aren’t you curious to find out which one? I dare you to hop to it and make an alarming discovery!
  5. Easter Art Tour | Friday 14th to Sunday 16th | Experience this annual event perfect for any art lover which includes an opening reception, open studios and a feature exhibit!
  6. Salt Spring Saturday Market | Saturdays Starting April 15th | 9:00am to 4:00pm | Welcome back Salt Spring Island's famous Saturday market with a leisurely stroll through the stalls to see what wonderful new creations local artisans have handcrafted over the winter months!
  7. Easter Egg Hunt  | Sunday 16th | 10:00am to 2:00pm | Salt Spring Cheese: 285 Reynolds Road | Fabulous for adults and children alike. While you're there, taste over a dozen soft and hard cheeses (and buy some for the road!), take the outdoor tour of the operations with informative sign boards, hunt for eggs, see the sheep, goats, chickens and meet the Easter Bunny!
  8. Look out for the leaping lambs! You'll swoon at the adorable lambs frolicking in fields across the island!
  9. Hear the frogs! Starting mid-March and at peaking in April and May, if you're anywhere near a pond or lake, listen out for the nightly frog chorus of the Pacific Chorus Tree Frog. This little critter - their bodies measuring approximately an inch long - makes a surprisingly loud croak and when they get together it sounds like you're in a tropical destination!

Earth Day Celebrations in Centennial Park | Sunday 23rd | 10:00am to 5:00pm | Centennial Park: Fulford-Ganges Road at Lower Ganges Road | Celebrate Mother Earth at Earth Day on Salt Spring Island! Fresh air event with live bands, speakers, information booths, yoga and activities for all ages.  Learn, connect, sing, dance, create change, have fun, celebrate our planet!
  11. Celebrate planet earth in style and visit sea, land and air! Head to Price Road Beach to dip a toe into the Pacific Ocean and look for sun bleached sand dollars and unique shells. Explore the beauty of the land in the fertile Burgoyne Valley and see what the earth provides from farm stands along the roadside. Then, ascend to top of the island, Mount Maxwell and enjoy the thrilling experience of being on the edge of a sheer cliff just like the birds!

Elmer Iseler Singers | Monday 24th | 7:30pm to 9:30pm | ArtSpring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $28 | The Elmer Iseler Singers, conducted by artistic director Lydia Adams, enters its 38th Anniversary Season in 2016/17. This 20-voice professional choral ensemble, founded by the late Dr. Elmer Iseler in 1979, has built an enviable reputation throughout Canada, the United States, and internationally.
  13. Gumboot Gala | Monday 24th | 7:00pm | Fulford Hall: 2591 Fulford-Ganges Road | Get your gumboots moving at the famous Gumboot Gala hosted by the Salt Spring Folk Club!
