October 2018 Events on Salt Spring Island

  1. It's apple season on Salt Spring! Sample some of the 350 apple varieties grown on the island at Salt Spring's two markets - the Tuesday Farmer's Market or the Saturday Market to stock your fridge with rich apple juice, apple butter, apple pies (& other baked goods), or freshly picked apples! The last Saturday Market will be held on October 27th and the last Farmers Market on Tuesday the 30st at Centennial Park in the heart of Ganges!
  2. It's that time of year where many studios on the island start to shorten their hours for the winter season. Grab a Salt Spring Studio Tour map to see what amazing items these creative workshops have to offer (and get a start on your Christmas shopping!)
  3. Clay Play | Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th | 11:00am to 3:00pm | Mahon Hall: 114 Rainbow Road | Free (ages 4+) | The ever popular Tracy Harrison and volunteers will provide support for anyone that whats to get their hands messy and explore clay! The Clay Play Laboratory will include 2 potters wheels as well as tools to explore shape cutting, textures and imprints and sculpture for you to try your hand at creating something of your own.
  4. Galiano Island Blackberry Festival | Saturday 6th | 8:00am to 5:00pm | Galiano Island South End Community Hall: 141 Sturdies Bay Road | Visit our neighbouring Gulf Island, Galiano, which is home to several "prickly" crops. The sweetest of these - the blackberry - grows at least two varieties. Enjoy this sweet culinary delight in fresh & frozen pies and enjoy other foodstuffs to celebrate the harvest season!
  5. Dancers of Damelahamid | Saturday 6th | 7:30pm to 9:30pm | $5-$25 | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | The Dancers of Damelahamid is an Indigenous dance company from the Northwest Coast of Canada. Flicker combines west coast graphic design with projected environments, live-action shadow-dance, and vibrant dance regalia in a story about a young man who discovers his potential in a mystical realm portrayed through coastal masked dance.
  6. Stop by for a Salt Spring Thanksgiving! The island has all the ingredients to make your meal unforgettable! Pick up everything you need for a mouth-watering local feast from turkey to sides at the markets, farmstands, bakeries, cheeseries, vineyards, breweries and cider houses as well as local shops! Head down to Ruckle Farm to visit their wandering free range turkeys!
  7. October is mushroom season in British Columbia! Head out for a mushroom hunt and keep a look out for some of the dozens of mushroom species that grow on Salt Spring Island including red lobsters, chantrelles, oyster, morel,  puff balls, scarlet waxcaps, black cap fungi and many more! Although tempting, be careful not to pick mushrooms without the help of an expert, or even better, leave them be for everyone's enjoyment.
  8. SSICA Demonstration Workshop | October 12th (10:00am to 5:00pm) & 13th (10:00am to 3:00pm) | Mahon Hall: 114 Rainbow Road | $125-$150 | Katrina Chaytor demonstrates her hand building methods in conjunction with plaster moulds to create a teapot and a cup and saucer. This demonstration is suitable for all experience levels, from beginner to advanced potters.
  9. Rainwater Harvesting Home Tour | Sunday 13th | 11:00am to 3:00pm (tours: on the hour) | Various Locations (map forthcoming) | The SSI Watershed Protection Alliance is organizing a tour with homeowners on Salt Spring Island to feature different solutions and innovations in rainwater harvesting and use.
  10. Sip and Savor Salt SpringSaturday 13th | 1:00pm to 4:00pm | Salt Spring Island Farmer's Institute: 351 Rainbow Road | $55-$65 [tickets] | Enjoy the fabulous Sip & Savour Salt Spring Grazing Experience! Visitors will sip fine beverages from Salt Spring, Vancouver Island and BC and savour samples of delicious local and regional foods prepared by local chefs and food producers.
  11. Orphan Wisdom: Night of Grief & Mystery Concert | Tuesday 16th | 7:00pm to 9:00pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $30-$40 | Part poetry, part lamentation, part book reading, part ribaldry, part concert, part lifting the mortal veil and learning the mysteries there… that’s what’s in store.
  12. Harvest Grape Stomp | Saturday 20th | 12:00pm to 4:00pm | Salt Spring Island Vineyards: 151 Lee Road | Feel grapes squish between your toes and enjoy food and music at the annual Harvest Grape Stomp! Bring your picnic blanket or some lawn chairs and enjoy the live music from Synergy and food from a local food truck! Participate in the grape stomp competition and grab a bottle of wine to enjoy!
  13. Experience Autumn on Salt Spring Island by visiting spectacular Fall Foliage locations such as Downtown Ganges with it's orange and yellow oak trees, the golden vineyards, Burgoyne Bay's maples and oaks and along Beddis Road which is lined with numerous maples, Ruckle Farm in Ruckle Provincial Park and from atop the island's two best lookouts from Mount Erskine and Mount Maxwell.
  14. Penderecki String Quartet | Sunday 21st | 2:30pm to 4:30pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $5-$30 | The Penderecki String Quartet began their career as winners of the Penderecki Prize at the National Chamber Music Competition in Poland in 1986. Once Upon a Time was written for and premiered by the Penderecki String Quartet as part of the 2015 Guelph Lecture - On Being Canadian. The sounds of funk and disco colour the piece via quotations, misquotations, and allusions to various music.
  15. Pushing the Limits with Energy Efficient Greenhouse Design | October 26th to 28th | The Garden: 122 Mansell Road | $450 | Grow avocados and oranges in Canada? Why not! Learn farm design process and build a small scale hydroponic system and process digestate from the anaerobic digester to create a nutrient solution. Lunch provided on the weekend with a dinner on Saturday made with produce from the garden.
  16. Luchkow-Jarvis-Stadlen Trio | Sunday 28th | 2:30pm to 4:30pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $5-$25 | An ensemble of outstanding early music performers from Canada and the United Kingdom, the Luchkow-Jarvis-Stadlen Trio is dedicated to performing repertoire for baroque violin, viol, and continuo.
  17. Looking to celebrate a spook-tacular Salt Spring Halloween? Find your perfect pumpkin at the Bon Acres Farm Pumpkin Patch (300 Le Page Road) or take a drive and visit the Island's many farmstands with jack o' lantern substitutes including turnips, potatoes and beets or the more traditional squash and pumpkins!
  18. The Spook House | Wednesday 31st | 5:00pm to fireworks | Ganges Fire Hall: 105 Lower Ganges Road | $5 | Walk through a spooky Haunted House!
  19. Halloween Fun! | Wednesday 31st | Dusk | Fulford Village - Ganges Village - Cedar Lane - Wildwood Drive - Maliview Drive | Visit these great Halloween destinations on Salt Spring Island to show off your costume, trick or treat and enjoy the decorations!
  20. Halloween Fireworks | Wednesday 31st | 7:30pm | Celebrate the spookiest (and fun!) night of the year with a spook-tacular fireworks show over Ganges Harbour set off by the Salt Spring Fire Department followed by Halloween treats!
