May 2017 Events on Salt Spring Island!

  1. Elfin magic abounds along the network of trails crisscrossing Mount Erskine - whether hunting for the perfect view or searching for the heart of Salt Spring's tall tales, there is nothing better than a brisk hike up one of the Island's most iconic mountains.
  2. Put your brain to use at Trivia Tuesdays at Moby's Pub (124 Upper Ganges Road)! Go against the best of the best at they vie for bragging rights as trivia champs! Every Tuesday from 7:00pm to 9:30pm!
  3. Salt Spring Forum Presents: Plenty of Fish in the Sea? | Friday 5th | 7:30pm to 9:15pm | Beaver Point Hall: 1361 Beaver Point Road | $20 | Dr. Daniel Pauly is a world-renowned fisheries scientist – in fact, Canada’s most cited scientist – whose expertise concerns the condition and future of the world’s fish and oceans.
  4. Union Duke | Saturday 6th | 7:30pm to 9:30pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $5 - $23 | Sweat flies and floorboards tremble – Union Duke is a Toronto folk quintet with an explosive live show. Bridging soulful indie rock with bluegrass and country, the group belts out soaking harmonies with three, four, and even five voices.
  5. May is planting time! For lots of garden goodies - visit the Chorus Frog Farmstand (263 Rainbow Road) for all sorts of plant starts including lettuce, greens, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes and more! Looking for more? Head up the road to Foxglove Farm & Garden for seeds, starts and more or, take a drive down to the north end of the Island and visit Fraser's Thimble Farm with over three acres of plants, shrubs and trees to make your garden the envy of the neighbourhood!
  6. Experience a garden lover's paradise! Salt Spring Island bursts into kaleidoscope of colour in May with Wisteria (see an amazing display at Salt Spring Island Cheese) and Laburnum as well as wild Orchids (including the rare Phantom Orchard!), Camas Lilies, Foxgloves, Trilliums and Fawn Lilies to name a few!
  7. Ruckle Heritage Farm Day | Sunday 7th | 10:00am to 3:00pm | Ruckle Farm: 1801 Beaver Point Road | Enjoy a touch of history at the farm event of the season - Ruckle Heritage Farm Day! Check out butter churning, blacksmithing,  spinners & weavers, quilters, log sawing, sheep herding, animal displays, entertainment and more!
  8. Celebrate Mom on Mothers Day (May 7th) with a brunch one of the many wonderful restaurants, pick out your favourite stops along the Salt Spring Studio Tour or comb the Island's many beaches while enjoying the company of family!
  9. SEA TO SEED Feast & Concert | Friday 12th | 4:30pm to 9:00pm | Stowel Lake Farm: 190 Reynolds Road | $10 - $70 | SEA TO SEED is stopping by for farm action, a farm feast & concert featuring Rising Appalachia. Beginning in 2014, a group of musicians, farmers, filmmakers, writers and photographers have set off on the Sea to Seed Tour, a month long sailing trip up through the Gulf Islands of the Salish Sea in British Columbia. They are on an experimental mission to collect and share the stories of the farming communities sown along the coast.
  10. Love music? Don't miss a night of the Tree House Cafe's Music Under the Stars - over one hundred days of music by a wide variety of artists starting May 15th! Sit under the seasonally changing 'ceiling' of branches and enjoy crooned tunes paired with an unforgettable meal packed with locally sourced ingredients!

GISPA: Under the Rainbow | Wednesday 18th & Thursday 19th | 7:30pm to 9:00pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $15 | The Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts (GISPA) proudly presents Under the Rainbow. Inspired by the classic stories known to Round Salt Spring Sailing Race - image of boatsmany as The Wizard of Oz and influenced by the turmoil of Judy Garland’s life, Under the Rainbow upholds GISPA’s signature fusion of music, dance, and theatre. Featuring unique choreography, composition and ensemble acting, Under the Rainbow is not to be missed.
  12. Pitchfork Social: Mike Farris | Friday 19th7:30pm to 10:30pm | Bullock Lake Farm: 360 Upper Ganges Road | $35 | Mike Farris is a musical renaissance man. He has toured as the lead singer for the southern rock band Screaming Cheetah Wheelies and as the lead singer for the incomparable blues band, Double Trouble. In his solo career he began to rediscover and reinterpret traditional black spiritual music by adding his own mix of vintage southern soul. Farris has won the prestigious Americana Music Award for Best New & Emerging Artist, a Dove Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album of the Year and a 2015 Grammy award for Best Roots Gospel Album.
  13. Round Saltspring Race | Friday 19th to Sunday 21st | Race Start: 10:00am | Boats take off from Ganges Harbor | Cheer on participants as over 100 boats race around Salt Spring! Because the course offers unique challenges such as tidal currents and variable conditions, it’s a great test of skill, tactics, seamanship, navigation and sailing ability. It's anyone’s race to win!
  14. It's beach season! Watch the Round Saltspring Race from several beachside vantage points including Price Road Beach and Arbutus Beach!

Gamelan Alligator Joy: Ventriloquial Investigations | Sunday 21st | 7:30pm to 9:00pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $5 - $23 | Ventriloquial Investigations is Michael O’Neill’s answer to the operatic works of Robert Ashley and the mysteries of Plato’s cave. A 40-minute musical theatre performance of ventriloquist’s puppet, Javanese gamelan, and live video score by Sammy Chien, this could be one of the most engaging philosophical treatises you will ever hear.
  17. Pitchfork Social: Richard Thompson | Wednesday 24th7:30pm to 10:30pm | Bullock Lake Farm: 360 Upper Ganges Road | $40 - $70 | Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting from the Americana Music Association in Nashville and Britain’s BBC Awards as well as the prestigious Ivor Novello. In 2011, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In the USA Thompson has been nominated at the Americana Music Awards for both Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.
  18. Bring your binoculars and enjoy some superb bird-watching! Rufous Hummingbirds are busy doing their impressive high speed J-dives to claim a mate. The Violet-Green Swallows have returned. Bright yellow American Goldfinches are here and the Nuthatches, Woodpeckers and other feathered friends are busy foraging for their young broods.

Victoria Baroque Players | Sunday 28th | 2:30pm to 4:00pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue | $28 | Victoria Baroque Players with Steven Devine, director and harpsichord present multi-instrument concertos by Bach and his contemporaries. Victoria Baroque Players presents high-quality, high-energy, and engaging performances of music from the baroque and classic periods. Playing on the instruments of the 18th century, the historically-informed ensemble brings audiences closer to the sound world of the period.
