Brigitte-Cycling-VesuviusCafePlanning Your Cycling Visit to Salt Spring Island

We recommend if you are planning a cycling visit to Salt Spring that you buy the Island Pathways Heritage Map from local non-profit society Island Pathways. It has beach accesses, great things to do, interesting history and nature facts plus cycling routes with distances all included. Island Pathways is a non-profit society on Salt Spring Island that works hard to support non-motorised transport on the island - including mapping pathways, installing bike racks all over the island and connecting Salt Spring's bicycle routes with other regional routes like the Lochside and Galloping Goose trails. As a cycling visitor we thoroughly recommend this map resource (all profits go to Island Pathways).

Love food? You will find it everywhere - in cafes, restaurants, our markets, artisan bread and cheesemaking studios and at an abundance of farmstands found all over the island. Tip: Bring plenty of small change and small banknotes with you to avail yourself of the delicious fresh produce and baking to be found at farmstands all over the island.

Renting Bicycles on Salt Spring Island

If you'd like to try cycling, but don't have your own bicycle, the Salt Spring Adventure Company rents out biycles - the 24 speed Norco hybrid bicycle with electric pedal-assist which will help you up those hills and inclines (advance booking is recommended). We also have expert cycle assistance in the form of the OutSpokin' Bike Shop  in Ganges village which sells both new and secondhand bicycles and also performs bike services. Oh - and you can get a free coffee while you wait (some say it's the best espresso on the island!).

Tip: Salt Spring Island is a rural community. Few of the roads are lit at night, so if you're planning on travelling by foot or bicycle after dark make sure you have lights and reflective clothing.

And if you get tired, get the bus:

You can always catch a bus from Salt Spring Island Transit  (or build a bus journey into part of your trip).Operating year round except for Christmas and New Year's day, our buses have racks that carry up to 2 bicycles on the front. Get your Salt Spring Bus Transit Rider's Guide here >>  Got transit questions? Call 250-538-4282.

In summary: Salt Spring Island is a fabulous place to bicycle, and many residents are avid cyclists. There can be challenges on the windy and sometimes hilly roads, but with everything there is to see - it's well worth the visit.
