August 2016 Events on Salt Spring Island

  1. Market Madness! Stay the week and experience three amazing markets showcasing the best Salt Spring Island has to offer! Kick off the weekend at the famous Saturday Market or explore the brand new Market in the Meadow on Saturdays and then make your way through a foodies paradise at the Tuesday Farmer's Market which offers the latest goodies from the ground straight from the farm to your table! Miss the markets? Stop by Artcraft at Mahon Hall daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm and peruse crafts created by artisans from across the Southern Gulf Islands, or, take a day and explore the Salt Spring Studio Tour!
  2. All Aboard to Explore! Saturdays in July and August offer an opportunity to explore four southern Gulf Islands (or the other way around!) aboard the Gulf Islands Water Taxi - Route 1: Galiano Island and Mayne Island and Route 2: Pender Island and Saturna Island. Depart from Ganges Harbour and see why the Gulf Islands are considered some of the most beautiful places in British Columbia!
  3. Experience the Gulf Islands from a whole different perspective! Hop aboard a zodiac boat captained by Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd. and search for marine wildlife! Look out for orca, minke, fin, grey and humpback whales, look out for porpoises, sea lions and seals while also searching the skies for the regal bald eagle!
  4. Grand Illusions | Thursday 4th to Saturday 6th | 7:30pm - 10:00pm | Artspring: 100 Jackson Avenue  | $20 | Step right up! Get your good vibrations here in the Just for Fun fashion from the creators of Peter on the Brink. Grand Illusion features songs of 1977 to 1991 from prog rock to pop to funk! Salt Spring Island Music & Garlic Festival | Saturday 6th to Sunday 7th | Paradise Salt Spring Garlic & Music FestivalFarm: 255 Musgrave Road | $40 - $75 | Rock on at Salt Spring Island's 2nd Annual Music & Garlic Festival! Enjoy tunes from dozens of artists including The Odds, Jesse Roper, Petunia & The Vipers, Carmanah, Barefoot Thieves and the 40 year reunion of Valdy & the Hometown Band! Enjoy food and drink, let the kids in on the fun with hayrides, face painting, games and more and also celebrate the Island's farming heritage (featuring garlic of course!)
  6. Take a hike! Explore dozens of kilometers of trails in scenic Ruckle Provincial Park (the oldest working farm in British Columbia!) from scenic shorelines to farmland to towering Coastal Douglas-fir forests. Stop by the rustic farm stand on your way in for a celebratory treat, bring your camping gear (be sure to book in advance!) or weave your way to Yeo Point Beach for an ocean dip (or a pebble hunting expedition!)

Chatham County Line | Wednesday 10th | 7:30pm to 10:00pm | Pitchfork Social: Bullock Lake Farm Barn (360 Upper Ganges Road) | $35 | Entering their second decade as an ensemble, Chatham County Line brings a deep reverence for traditional American roots and timeless bluegrass music. Their songs are powerfully contemporary yet rich with the complex resonance of their southern heritage. Not to be missed!
  8. Want more music? Head down to Salt Spring Vineyards ( 151 Lee Road) for their Friday Wine Down from 4:00pm to 6:00pm or Sunday Afternoon Music in the Vines from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Bring a blanket, grab a bottle of wine and enjoy the summer among the vines!
  9. Can't get enough of the Salt Spring Island music scene? Stop by the Tree House Cafe's Music Under the Stars with over one hundred days of music (Wednesdays to Sundays) performed by a wide variety of artists! Sit under the namesake of this cafe and enjoy tunes paired with a meal packed with locally sourced ingredients!
  10. Speaking of stars, experience a night sky unparalleled in British Columbia on Salt Spring Island and watch the galaxy rain during the annual Persied Meteor Shower which peaks August 12th and 13th! See around 60 to 100 meteors per hour Blackburn Lake(depending on the moon, best seen before dawn) which originates near the constellation Perseus which can be found in the north-eastern part of the sky.

Family Days at Blackburn Lake Nature Reserve | Sunday 14th & Sunday 28th | 1:00pm to 4:00pm | Blackburn Lake Nature Reserve: 265 Blackburn Road | Get More “Vitamin N” into your family’s life on the weekend! Nature! Nature afternoons are open, self-directed discovery of Blackburn Lake Nature Reserve, along with a game and hands-on activities. Check out "Batty Over Bats: the Bats of Blackburn Lake" on August 14th and "The Western Painted Turtle" on August 28th!
  12. Amy Helm | Friday 19th | 7:30pm to 10:00pm | Pitchfork Social: Bullock Lake Farm Barn (360 Upper Ganges Road) | $35 | There’s something about musical bloodlines that cannot be denied. Amy Helm is the daughter of The Band’s Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, and a lifetime of growing up around some of the finest American music ever recorded is evident. Her talent takes up where her father’s leaves off – her voice is an exquisite instrument and she is an accomplished drummer and mandolin player.
  13. Rush Basketry Weekend with Joan Carrigan | Friday 26th to Sunday 28th |10:00am to 4:00pm | $300 | Explore a new art medium at a three day workshop with local award winning basket maker Joan Carrigan. All levels welcome!
  14. The fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down! Visit Salt Spring Island's very own movie theatre, The Fritz Cinema (named after it's feline founder) to see the hottest summer blockbusters! From action packed thriller to family friendly stories there is something for every member of the family!
  15. Salt Spring Island Toy Run | Friday 26th to Sunday 28th | Farmer's Institute: 351 Night SkyRainbow Road | Help raise funds for toys at this weekend long extravaganza featuring a show and shine, a cross-Salt Spring Island motorcycle ride, entertainment, games, food and a beer garden!
  16. Firefly Lantern Festival | Saturday 26th | 7:00pm | Centennial Park: Fulford-Ganges Road at Lower Ganges Road | Explore Ganges at twilight amongst hundreds of twinkling lanterns during the Firefly Lantern Festival encompassing a procession and entertainment for the whole family!
